Our big break in the steer shows came when John went to Oklahoma to one of Kirk Stierwalt's clipping clinics. Kirk is a highly respected cattleman in Oklahoma. He not only knows how to groom cattle, he knows how to teach it. Over 100 students have gone through the "California Clipping Clinic". We know it seems a little pricey, but we take only meal expense money out of the proceeds and the rest goes straight to Kirk, who pays his own way here to teach willing students. It makes all the difference in the ring as well as in the confidence of the exhibitor. We hope you'll join us!
Check in is Friday at 5:00 PM, followed by the opening lecture of an intense teaching session taught by the foremost expert in cattle grooming, clipping and showing, Kirk Stierwalt. Saturday's all day session includes lunch and is followed by a complimentary Santa Maria Style Barbecue dinner for all participants and their families. The Sunday session includes lunch, as well, and showmanship practice. All this should end by 3:30 in the afternoon (however, we've done this many years and it hasn't ended at 3:30 yet!).
Only paid participants may be in attendance. Cost is $325 per person. We will arrange airport transportation for anyone who flies into Santa Maria or San Luis Obispo. Several hotel chains are represented here in Pismo Beach, please feel free to ask about them as well. You may park your livestock trailers on our ranch. A deposit of $162.50 must accompany registration to hold your spot, with the balance due at check-in. The class size is limited in size, which is a first come first serve basis. There is an age requirement of 13 years and older. We will send you a detailed schedule and a list of needed supplies, which includes a steer or heifer, at the end of March.
